Discover More About Coffee Roasts
Coffee roasting is one of the most important factors in determining your coffee’s quality and flavour. As each bean is carefully heated, its natural oils and sugars transform, creating new flavours and enhancing existing ones. This process requires skilled roasters who perfect roast times to unlock the finest from every bean.
- Dark Roast
- Medium Roast
- Light Roast

Dark Roast
As the roasting process continues, the coffee begins to lose its oils and sugars, taking on a glossy texture and darker flavour. The roasting process begins to infuse smoky flavours and darker tones more suited to mochas, lattes, and similarly creamy coffees.

Medium Roast
A medium roast is a perfect mid-point between capturing the original flavour of the bean and the absorbed flavours of the roasting process. Medium roast is suitable for almost any type of coffee equipment and is a perfect choice for beginner baristas.

Light Roast
Lighter roasts maintain the coffee bean’s original flavour, which is heavily influenced by the soil and environment of the coffee’s origin. These roasts keep the naturally sweeter, fruitier flavour of the coffee cherries - perfect for an espresso, Americano, or a cold brew coffee.

Your Coffee questions answered
What are the best rated Whittard Coffee beans?
Our bestselling coffees are Guatemala Elephant, Jamaican Blue Mountain, or Santos & Java. We recommend trying these to get started. Remember, our Taste Promise allows you to swap your flavour for something else if you don’t get on with your first choice.
Does Whittard sell Decaf Coffee beans?
We do! Our Mountain Washed Coffee Beans offer a chemical-free decaf option. This coffee uses natural mountain water to wash the caffeine out of the beans instead of the usual chemical heavy processing. The result means you get all the flavour without the heavy buzz. Please note, all decaf coffee contains some caffeine, approximately 1/10th of a regular cup of coffee.
What is the best way to store coffee beans?
We highly recommend an opaque, airtight container kept at a cool temperature. An airtight container with a one-way valve would be best as it allows the beans to off-gas, keeping them fresher for even longer. While coffee beans are resilient to expiration, unsealed coffee grounds will go stale after a day or two. Keep them in a sealed container and they’ll be fresh for around 1-2 weeks.
What is the best coffee for beginners?
We recommend trying a medium roast coffee to begin with as it offers a balance of characteristics from dark and light roasts. Once you’ve discovered what flavours you like, try other roasts and see which you prefer. Darker roasts offer caramelised and smokey tones. Light roasts offer fruitier, brighter tones. Medium roasts are more chocolatey and more forgiving to brew. Check out our guide to find out how to get the most from your coffee.
How long does brewed coffee stay fresh?
Brewed coffee begins to go stale after a few hours, but this time can be extended by keeping your coffee in the fridge. Our advice is to brew a fresh cup each time!
What are the best flavoured coffee beans?
That’s up to you! Our flavoured coffee selection offers a delicious blend of coffee beans, paired with some of the most popular flavours we can find. Take a look, pick a flavour you like the sound of, and give them a try. Remember, our Taste Promise means you can change flavours if you don’t get on with your first choice.
What is single origin coffee and why is it special?
Single origin coffee means the beans are sourced from a single region of a specific country. This kind of coffee often provides unique flavours that can only be found in that region compared to blended coffees. Similarly, single estate coffees come from a single farm, but these varieties are often rare to find! Our limited edition single estate coffee beans are often sourced from family-owned single estates offering a true taste of the location they’re harvested in.
